    Our status as the go-to supplier of truly innovative solutions is the result of substantial resources allocated to R&D every year. Our R&D programmes are closely connected to the qualification work carried out at our in-house test facilities at the Copenhagen headquarters and the Kalundborg factory. At our workshops for full-scale and mid-scale pipe testing and ISO-17025 accredited material laboratory, we continuously explore and expand the boundaries of flexible pipe performance. Beyond developments, the R&D programmes form an integral part of validating and optimizing the manufacturing processes in our factories.

    Our R&D staff has a unique set of competencies, all dedicated to the development and qualification of technologies within high performance polymeric, metallic and fibre reinforced materials, innovative riser system designs and intelligent sensing of risers and flowlines.

    In the late 1990s, our proprietary polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer technology began to see use in both dynamic riser applications as well as static flowlines for transport of hydrocarbons at elevated temperatures. Our single-layer extruded inner liners made of unplasticized PVDF material have proved to be a technically superior solution for pipe applications subjected to harsh bore environments, high pressure fluctuations and demanding operating temperatures in the range of -30°C to +130°C (-22°F to +266°F).

    XLPE (PEX) 
    With the development of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) polymer grade using our proprietary infrared online cross- linking technique, we have met the market’s demand for a hydrolysis resistant and cost-efficient inner liner solution for a wide temperature range bridging the temperature features of a high-density HDPE inner liner with the higher temperature capabilities of a PVDF inner liner. Furthermore, due to its documented high cross-linking degree throughout the entire wall thickness, XLPE is extremely durable and most suitable for harsh bore environments, including super-critical CO2 applications.

    Ultra deep water developments 
    To expand the options for operators looking for ultra-deep water solutions, we are developing a number of concepts, including a K-carcass, which dramatically increases the flexible pipe’s resistance to the external ambient hydrostatic pressure, as well as FLEXTREME™, a hybrid composite/steel flexible pipe with a low weight and extremely high crushing, collapse and tensile capacities.

    Shallow water riser systems 
    For areas with extreme wind, current and wave conditions, we have developed patented system configurations that prove effective at water depths of approx. 42 m with wave heights of up to 16 m, wave periods of up to 16 s and seabed currents exceeding 1.92 m/s.

    These designs show a documented ability to work as highly versatile systems for extreme shallow water projects, enabling very high wave height to depth ratios.

    Flexibles has developed a unique intelligent monitoring system for flexible pipes. Using optic fibre technology we can now help operators avoid unplanned production shutdown, minimize hydrate formation and waxing and monitor system configuration integrity. 

    The monitoring system entails a suite of temperature and strain monitoring options that provide real-time event detection as well as long-term data collection. The data provides very accurate information on the integrity of the flexible pipe systems during service. This monitoring system constitutes an important part of an overall general-purpose integrity monitoring system.

When it comes to exceeding the possible in terms of water depth, super-critical CO2 and sour service H2S, Flexibles is working on the answer with FLEXTREME™. A fibre- reinforced composite, FLEXTREME™ will be an unbonded structure consisting of a combination of helically wound steel and composite armour wires and concentric, extruded or wound polymer layers.

    30–50% lighter than conventional flexible pipes, FLEXTREME™ will be the definitive response to the problem of taking subsea production to depths exceeding 3,000 m. The composite materials make the pipe armour layers impervious to CO2 and H2S-based corrosion and enable a construction making the pipe highly resistant to internal and external pressure. These specifications combined with our ability to fully integrate product know-how with system expertise will provide a solution for production at ultra-deep waters.
